We want to invite you to fast and pray with us for the next 21 days for university communities in NY/NJ. We are NOT saying that you have to not eat or drink for 21-days, but what we are inviting you into is a time of prayer, intercession and fasting for students, faculty, staff that we all might “come out of Babylon”. Resources are below!
Every day, we are invited to worship other gods like money, power, success and nation. Daily we are invited to root our identities in twisted views of work, class, sexuality, ethnic identity, and nation. As Scott Bessenecker at Urbana 2018 said, “maybe Babylon isn’t out there. Maybe Babylon is in us.”
And every time we say yes to Jesus, we are choosing to say “no” to the Flesh, the World, and the Devil. When we worship the One True God, we are refusing to bow to empire. We invite you for 21 days to fast and pray with us that revival would come and come first in our hearts and lives that we might be faithful witnesses to the Jesus of scripture, not of our culture, our context or our country. 21 Days is significant because of Daniel’s resistance to the idols of the Babylonian empire and his refusal along with the three Hebrew boys to worship the king instead of God. We long to have the same faithful witness!
TEXT “PRAYFORNYNJ” to 41411 and every day you will be receive a prayer request for our campus and community work in InterVarsity NY/NJ. Our students, staff, and ministry partners will share one prayer request in the morning and one praise report in the evening and you will receive that via text.
Resources for Fasting
For some of you reading this message, fasting is a normal part of your spiritual life and brings great joy. For others it may be completely foreign. And for some of you, fasting comes with some baggage from your background that make it unhelpful. InterVarsity’s NY/NJ Holy Discontent Initiative would like to offer some resources to guide our time of prayer and fasting together.
